Style stalking: Gwen Stefani edition

Hey guys I’m so excited I’m starting a new series about how we can successfully style stalk our favorite celebrities and take their signature looks and plug them into our everyday beauty routines. Please don’t tell me I’m the only one who loves celebrities and internet stalking them facetiously. It’s become one of my favorite hobbies. Like my girl Coco Chanel once said “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” Don’t we all get stuck in a beauty rut every now and then (top knot and Yoga leggings anyone??)  I know I get bored with my everyday look so I like to shake it up. What better way to do that than borrowing icons tried and true beauty tips?  I’m kicking it off with the lovely Miss Stefani. Ladies back me up here I don’t care who you are, everyone has a major case of GWEN FEVER now that she is on the voice! Everyone knows there ain’t no cure for that! I love everything about her. She is so effortlessly cool with her whole “I’ve been in a band for 20 years.” thing. She’s rad and everyone knows it even Gwen knows it.  I wanna just sit next to her and just watch her be Gwen Stefani and I’ll just smile and nod like an excited and dorky foreign exchanged student who doesn’t speak any english. Sorry that was tangent, moving on.

Her signature look is the classic pin up. There is a reason this has been such a staple in the beauty industry for the past 60 years cause it just works. It really is the epitome of classic, Gwen is the modern day Marilyn Monroe. I am in love with it cause it just oozes femininity. This is a look every one can pull off and recreate themselves!

Luckily for this look we get to keep the lazy top knot. I think the messier the better. I like my bun literally right on top of my head. Then whip out the black liquid liner (You want the wings so sharp they could kill a man!), lashes, sharp lined brows, keep the blush light, This look would be nothing with out the bright red lip, I highly recommend using Russian Red from MAC this is my favorite red of all time. It’s matte and stays on forever. Like almost too long you pretty much can’t get it to come off at the end of the day! Its a very blue red….translation, it makes you teeth look insanely white! HOORAY! One last thing please do yourselves a favor and listen to the Gwen Stefani pandora station. Your ears will thank you!

The inspiration for this look

That one blonde chick. Gwen Stefani

what other celebrities would you like to me style stalk? Let me know. I love suggestions!

DIY Dalmatian Wall Stencil

dalmatian bathroom

We all have seen the beauty that is the dalmatian wallpaper. Its beautiful! I have been itching to get this fun print in my house but was too nervous to dive in and make a room a loud print, so I picked our powder bath. It is a small space and I felt like I could get away with a busy print. Its a fun way to make a statement and surprise your guests without going over the top. For example, having a huge living room wall with bright orange damask wallpaper. Cmon people Liberace doesn’t live here! Even tho that would be incredibly RAD! I love the dalmatian wallpaper but hi….I’m poor and I like a challenge, so I volunteered myself and my hubs to make our own custom stencil! It was a time consuming project but not difficult really. We went all Cruella Deville up in here! I had my thyroidectomy back in May and I knew I would have a lot of down time, so I started the stencil then. It was tedious work but I did all of it while under the influence of heavy narcotics, so if I could do it, anyone can. Im kinda wondering why no one intervened and took away my X-acto knife. I was clearly in to condition to use it!

What you’ll need:

Martha Stewart adhesive stencil film

X acto Knife

Painters Tape

Dalmatian print out

cardboard (or anything to slide under stencil sheet while you cut out dots to not scratch work space)

Sponge brush

We called over Trav-the-tool-man-Taylor (my brother in law) to help us learn how to do the Batton board on the wall. It makes any space instantly look custom, more expensive, and fancy and who doesn’t want that?? There are several tutorials on how to do that, so check out here and here.

 photo 2-3

I started combing google images for a dalmatian print that I liked. I found this one and printed off several copies. I taped them over my stencil sheet and just started cutting them out dot by dot.

photo 3-2 photo 1-2

Make sure you have something underneath where you are poking through the stencil or you could permanently disfigure your workspace. I just used cardboard that I hoard in my garage for some unknown reason. I was practically giddy when I found a use for it.

 photo 2-2

Finally its all done. Ain’t she a beaut?

photo 5-2

Just stick it up and use your sponge brush and start dabbing away. IMPORTANT: Be sure to not have too much paint on your brush or you will get serious bleedage under your stencil. That’s THE WORST! My favorite thing about this stencil is that is doesn’t need to be perfectly spaced. You can fill in spots by making misshapen dots using the corner of your brush. It takes no artistic ability at all. I also liked to flip my stencil over every now and then so I didn’t have any sort of uniform look happening. It took what seemed like forever but between Todd and I we finally got this sucker done!

You can find these at  Z Gallerie.

I’m so happy with the way it worked out and Todd is really happy I saved him several hundred dollars. Let me know if you have and further questions or comments! If you make your own stencil I’d love to see it! tag me on instagram @christineyallen and use the hashtag #thatoneblondechickproject Computer high five!

Halloween party!!!

This weekend was the annual Allen family Halloween party in Saint George! I was a dork and only took a few photos. My cute mother in law Cindy always goes all out. There was a fashion show, pumpkin carving, frosting sugar cookies with halloween sprinkles, a halloween piñata, a cake walk with tons of prizes. Joslyn was anxiously counting “sleeps”  for the days leading up to the big bash! I love all the fun traditions my girls get to be a part of! I originally wanted the girls to be Dorothy and Glinda the good witch for halloween and Joss was so on board! My mom gave the wizard of Oz to Joss for her birthday she thought it was a little creepy but she loved it and wanted Todd to be the scarecrow. Then we went to disneyland and my plans turned to crap!  Long story short. The park was closing so Todd was gonna run across the park to go buy Joss an Elsa nightgown cause her cousin Kolbie has one and Joss dies over it every time she sees it. He is such a cute daddy and sprinted with Joslyn in tow the whole way around the park and he came back with a very expensive and GLITTERY dress and a VERY happy Joslyn. He later regretted buying it and said ” I should have just gotten her a nightgown that would have been way better.” I’m like that was the plan the whole time you ninny! (I guess he got all caught up in the disney magic) So she will be Elsa for the next year or two so we can get our moneys worth out of that dang dress! Ps. My house is COVERED in Elsa sparkles!

 Joss and Kate halloween

This picture makes me laugh. I was snapping some shots of them and I crouched down and they copied my every move.

This portrays both of them both perfectly.

See this little face? It’s got mischief written all over it. Little stinker wouldn’t keep her crown on.

Joss doesn’t take dressing up as Elsa lightly. She is very serious about keeping her ice powers in check.

Happy Halloween everybody!

My Lipstick Library

Some call me a lipstick librarian.. Just kidding no body calls me that but I wish they would! I’m talking all about lipstick! It’s my favorite part of my make up routine. It can pull your whole look together and makes everything look finished! People say to me all the time ” I could never pull off a bold/bright lip” You know what I say to that?? POPPYCOCK! Pardon my French. I used to be terrified of color too! Wearing lipstick in General can take some getting used to so try it out and STICK with it. (see what I did there?)  Here’s a tip if you’re completely new to wearing color on your lips at all. Wear sheer tinted glosses. They can ease you into feeling comfortable with color. Revlon has some really pretty ones Berry Allure and Super Natural are my favorites.

Bright lips aren’t everyone’s cup of tea and that’s totally cool. I really dig being a girl and getting all dolled up and since The Lord did not bless me with ample juggs I’m forced to play up other feminine features such as my face! If you’re a fraidy cat like I used to be just remember that bright red lips may not look good on everyone but confidence does. That being said I think we have all heard the cardinal rule for make-upery (totally a legit term) thou shalt only play up one feature at a time. Choose either your eyes or you lips but not both unless you’re a hooker then it’s totally acceptable and encouraged.  I tend to always choose lips cause I’m self conscious of my eyes I have Graves’ disease ( psst… If you wanna learn more about that you can find that info in My Story.) My eyes are now really big and asymmetrical so I like a bold lip it distracts attention from my eyes. Truly it’s not all bad though since my eyes hulked out I have been told on several occasions that I look just like Emma Stone at the gym Some Australian guy came up to me and asked me if I was Emma Stone’s twin sister and i was all like “Me?…Umm…No?” he was all “If I find out your lying to me I’ll be mad.” oh those Australians so I’LL TAKE IT!  I wanna share some of my favorite lip colors that I wear all year round! I hate to choose favorites! I hope all of my other lipsticks will understand that its nothing personal.

Colour Riche 170 Cotton pink  L’oreal Paris

This is one of the more subtle ones for those who are skittish. Its the perfect soft pink and they are pretty hard to come by.

Up The Amp MAC

I never wore purple lips. Mostly cause when you think purple lips you automatically think corpse right? Not with this color. If you have any green in your eyes this will bring it out and make your eyes pop. It’s also stunning on blue eyed girls.

Persistent Peach Prolong wear lipglass from MAC

I’m not sure why but I just don’t love Nude lips on me. I LOVE them on other people just not me. Thats why I wear this one so often it’s just enough peach but it’s still in the nude family so I can be on trend. Its a prolong wear and really does stay on all day. for a lipgloss thats really saying something!

DSCN1404 DSCN1412

Fuchsia Flash  Maybelline

This is one of my all time favorites! How can you not be bubbly and happy with such a fun color on your face? People always seem to ask me the most about this one. It’s really bright but it looks great on everyone! Blondes, brunettes, red heads, everyone! It’s such a true pink you just can’t go wrong! Also its a perfect dupe for Candy Yum Yum from MAC seriously don’t even waste your time with Candy Yum Yum. Fuchsia Flash is where its at!

DSCN1419 DSCN1424DSCN1427

Kate moss collection 107 Rimmel London

This is my number one must have. Berry lips are all the rage this fall. This is a matte finish it stays in place forever and doesn’t bleed. No looking like a little old lady!

One last tip: When wearing bold lips exfoliate before applying! Especially with matte lipsticks. I always use sugar and water. works like a charm!

Now go put on some lipstick and live a little!

Words to live by ladies!

wooden bead bracelets

I saw these super cute bracelets on Pinterest a while back and I decided to try my hand at making my own. They turned out darling if I do say so myself! They were really easy to make even Joslyn joined in on the fun, though it made everything take 10x longer she was so proud that she helped make her very own bracelet. I’ve been having way to much fun making them I made a few bright colored ones for my girls, I made a bridal themed one for a family friend and One with fall hues for myself! We get a lot of compliments on them. Here is the tutorial let me know if you have any questions!

What you’ll need:

Wooden beads

painters tape

acrylic paint

small paint brush

decorative beads

decorative charm (optional)

embroidery floss

jump rings (large and small)

metallic bead cord I used 1mm

E6000 glue

Geesh now that I wrote it out that seems like a lot of items! luckily you can find everything at hobby lobby and it’s practically all in the jewelry isle, there are so many fun beads and charms to choose from you could go crazy and make holiday themed ones! I think I’ll make my girls some for Christmas I’ll post them when I do. Everything is pretty inexpensive too so that a plus!

Lets get started shall we?

image image image

Step one. Paint your beads! Wrap your painters tape all the way around  horizontally covering half of the bead. Just be sure the tape over laps to avoid bleeding and that it is a relatively straight line. I used the tape that hangs off the bead to hold on to while painting. It actually worked put quite nicely. I did 2 or 3 coats on each bead. It goes by pretty quick once you get a system going I swear! Use as many different colors as your little heart desires! I used 4-5 colors per bracelet depending on the size. Less for kids more for adults.

step 2. Make your tassel this step you can mostly follow the photos step by step.  I took my Embroidery floss and cut it in half, that way I can get two tassels out of it. After I cut it I pulled out two strands and set aside.

image image

thread all your floss through your large jump ring. fold in half then tie a square knot right up by the top with your two strands you left out. Cut off the strings and cut the bottom of the fringe so its nice and even.

It’s not pictured but I did hook the large jump ring onto the smaller one to attach it on to the bracelet but its not really necessary. You may need pliers for that.

Step 3.Measure your wrist by wrapping the chord around it and leave a little longer than you think so when you add your beads it wont make it too tight.

Step 4. Once you cut it string all your beads in the order you like. Add your charm and tassel. I tied the chord in a square knot and added a dot of E6000 right on the Knot to make sure it would never ever ever be able to come undone! That glue is dead serious!

Step 5. slip it on and admire all your hard work!

My little ladies got umbrella charms because Joslyn is always talking about her “regular umbrella” as opposed to an irregular umbrella? haha I have no idea.  I never want to forget all the silly things she says so this will serve as a good reminder.

bracelet invitation

So cute right??? I tracked down the original source of the pin in case you want to skip making your own and buy one from Caged Bird she has lots of gorgeous stuff! If you decide to make your own bracelet I’d love to see how it turned out! Tag me on instagram @christineyallen and use the hashtag #thatoneblondechickproject

Who’s that girl?

Oh hey you! I’m so glad you’re here! If you’re new around these parts I feel like before we dive in and become besties I should give you fair warning and let you know the mess you’re getting yourself into! Here are some fast facts about me!

1. I can lay on the dry sarcastic sense of humor pretty thick. I really try and only use my sarcastic powers for good!
2. I’m a stay at home mom of two little girls. I love making crafts and finding projects to make for them and trying to redecorate my house on a dime. I’m going to figure out how to do it myself no matter how big or small the project may be.
3. I can quote F.R.I.E.N.D.S like I can quote the Book of Mormon. If you know who Regina Falange is, or you yell “PIVOT” anytime you move furniture, well could we BE anymore compatible?
4. I love getting dolled up and wearing ridiculously bold lip colors and trying new fun hairstyles and I can teach you how to do it too!

A couple more things you simply must know about me if we are gonna be best buds are I have very few and albeit random talents.

I’m good at trivia games! (I spend my free time googling fun facts about anything and everything!) I have an old soul, Growing up with only oldies radio stations and a dad who only ever watched the history channel are all contributing factors.

I am pretty much the bomb at painting nails and I have a billion different nail polishes and I’ll paint your nails anytime!

Lastly not to sound cocky or anything but I’m completely gifted in the category of necklace untangling. I’ve never met a necklace I couldn’t straighten out. You got a necklace wad? Bring them to me I’ll put em in rehab! Also I tend to over use exclamation points, cause I’m always pretty excited about shiz!!

Lastly please pay no attention to my grammar and writing style. I am a hillbilly to my core I’m trying to act like the sophisticated folk but like they say you can take the girl out of the country but blah, blah, blah and so fourth. I testify the struggle is real.

Name Changer!

I’m a little sad to say that Confetti Darling is no more. The blog got a make over and it is so fetch! (I’m still trying to make fetch happen) We are on to bigger and better things like becoming a “.com.” It’s like the blog turned 18 and decided it wanted to legally change it’s name and look. Well the blog wants what it wants so there just wasn’t anything I could do. I just rolled with it and now I have this lovely new site with a new name! I’m so glad the blog grew out of that horribly awkward stage. Phew! Well….truth be told I went to buy the domain for Confetti Darling but someone already snatched it up. DAG NABBIT! So I had to go with another direction.

I’ll quickly share a few of the many reasons I started this blog. I really enjoy being crafty! I guess you could say I’m a hopeless cheapskate, I really enjoy long romantic walks down the isles of hobby lobby. I’ve got restoration hardware taste on a thrift store budget. I love to create. I kind of live for when people say “OMG Christine I am obsessed with that, where did you get it?” Then I’m all. “I made it! BOOM!” At my house there are always random theoretical explosions happening. Not in a war zone kind of way but more like a cheesy magician kind of way.

My hubby is truly great at every facet of life he’s easy on the eyes for starters, he’s a hard worker, he’s incredibly ambitious and self motivating, he’s a terrific father, and smartest smarty pants I know.  BUT he doesn’t particularly like house projects. That’s actually putting it too delicately. He HATES them! By nature he just isn’t a handy guy nor does he wish to be. I’m cool with that, I’ve decided I’m going to stop being a damsel in distress and stop waiting for hubby to fix, paint or build this or that. I’m gonna learn how to do it all myself. I’m going to  just go do the things I’m passionate about. Although I’m sure I’ll still bounce ideas off of him and ask him to help with things that I’m not tall enough to reach or I may have to ask him to open a jar or two. (Seriously why do they make those jars so damn hard to open?).

I love doing hair! I’m a hairstylist. I’d love to share the tips and tricks I have learned over the years. I am a clip in extension addict. They are the greatest thing to happen since sliced bread. I just love making people feel beautiful and good about themselves! My three year old has hair like Rapunzel. I’ll do hair posts about toddler hairstyles too! If I can get her to sit still for long enough that is!

I’m a stay at home mom of two little girls my life is full of pink clothes, pink toys, essentially  lots and lots of pink, never ending tubes of lipstick, bum wiping, and a non stop game of pick up/catch up. To borrow the words of my girl Mindy Kaling ” I’m constantly in a state of self improvement, but I don’t beat myself up about it.” I’m going to conquer my life with one DIY project, and one fairy princess tea party at a time! I love my little family we have a pretty good thing going ya know? It might all be silly but the silliness is kind of my jam!
